Helping someone with a disability get ready for the dentist

For people with disabilities, it can help to prepare for the dentist. Here are four tips for a smoother dentist visit.

1. Practice at home:

Show what the dentist may do during their checkup. This could include opening their mouth wide or counting their teeth.

2. Go when it’s slow:

Plan checkups during a quieter time of day if you can. This can make visits less stressful.

3. Bring items from home:

If this is a new experience, bring noise-canceling headphones, a stuffed animal, or a blanket. These can be comforting.

4. See the same office:

Visiting the same dental staff can reduce anxiety. Over time, this can make checkups easier.
