Root canals can save your teeth

If you have a tooth that’s very hurt or infected, you might need a root canal. This treatment can save a tooth that might otherwise be lost.

When you might need a root canal

The soft area at the center of a tooth is known as the pulp. It has nerves and blood vessels.

The pulp can get infected if you have a deep cavity or injury to your tooth.

If untreated, this infection can spread to bone or other areas around the tooth. This can be painful, and it might cause you to lose your tooth.

To save your tooth, your dentist might ask you to get a root canal.

What to expect during a root canal

If you need a root canal, your dentist will send you to a special dentist known as an endodontist.

First, the endodontist numbs your tooth so that you won’t feel anything. Then, they clean out the infection from inside the tooth.

Next, they fill the tooth with a special material to prevent other infections. To finish, they seal the tooth with a temporary filling.

Later, you’ll get a permanent filling or crown to protect your tooth.

Healthy habits for a healthy smile

Root canals can save an infected tooth, but it’s best to stop these problems before they start. Make sure to brush twice a day and visit your dentist twice a year.
